About this board game

The Mystic Wood is a 2–4 player adventure board game with a playing time of about 60 minutes, in which knights explore a randomly arranged woodland to complete individual quests and escape.

Each player takes the role of a knight with a particular quest. The game board is built from randomly placed tiles, which are uncovered as the knights reach them. This creates a changing journey through the wood, with discoveries shaped by the tiles revealed during play.

Some tiles show fixed locations, while others are glades. In a glade, a randomly chosen role card may reveal either a spell or a denizen. These encounters add uncertainty to exploration, as denizens behave in different ways according to their nature or the result of a die roll.

  • Hidden exploration: Randomly placed tiles are uncovered as knights reach them.
  • Changing encounters: Glades can reveal spells or denizens through randomly chosen role cards.
  • Rival and shared play: Knights compete to achieve their own quests, but may also work together to defeat a denizen.
  • Quest-based victory: The first knight to complete their quest and leave the Mystic Wood wins.

Denizens may help the knights or hinder them, making every encounter relevant to the race toward the exit. Players must pursue their own objectives while deciding when cooperation is worthwhile.

Originally released in 1980, The Mystic Wood combines exploration, adventure, hidden information, and competing goals in a compact quest. The game was expanded by The Mystic Wood Extension Kit.
