About this board game

The Palace of Mad King Ludwig is a tile-laying board game for 2–4 players, with games lasting about 75 minutes. Players act as architects building one gigantic palace together, room by room, while trying to make the strongest overall contribution.

King Ludwig II of Bavaria wants a world-renowned palace featuring gorgeous appointments, white stone, water, and swans everywhere. Each player adds rooms to the shared design, and completed rooms provide rewards as the palace takes its unique shape.

The game’s distinctive endgame timer is visible on the table. As rooms are completed, a moat slowly forms around the outside of the palace. When the two ends connect, the palace is finished, creating a growing sense of pressure as the game moves toward its conclusion.

  • Shared palace construction: Add rooms one at a time to a single enormous palace.
  • Room rewards: Completing rooms provides benefits during the game.
  • Closing moat: Watch the moat develop and signal the approaching end of the game.
  • Multi-colored swan tokens: Use them as currency, points, and keys to new abilities.

Resource management revolves around the game’s multi-colored swan tokens. Their flexible role gives them importance in several parts of play, serving not only as currency but also as points and access to new abilities.

Although The Palace of Mad King Ludwig shares tile-laying, room rewards, and the pleasure of watching a palace emerge with its predecessor, its gameplay is entirely different. There is no auction; instead, the closing moat provides a clever visual timer for a collaborative construction challenge with a competitive final goal.

Once the moat connects and the palace is complete, the player who has contributed the most wins.
