About this board game
This Terrible Sound is a detailed two-player simulation of the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 18–20, 1863, with a listed playing time of 120 minutes and strong solitaire suitability.
Designed as a definitive Chickamauga game, it combines the popular Civil War Brigade Series rules with specially adapted extensions for regimental-scale action. Units are represented at the scale of regiments and batteries, with 100-yard hexes and 15-minute game turns.
The game’s six maps were researched using multiple park histories, battlefield surveys, and county historical maps. Together, they portray the battlefield and surrounding areas in exceptional detail, providing a substantial setting for repeated play and historical exploration.
A broad selection of scenarios makes the system accessible to different skill levels and available playing spaces. The box includes seven campaign scenarios, three two-map scenarios, and two one-map scenarios, allowing sessions to range from smaller engagements to large, in-depth campaigns.

Optional and special rules cover notable elements such as Major John Mendenhall, Wilder’s Brigade, the Reserve Corps Ammunition Train, variant units and entry, dealing with General Bragg, and wing commanders. These additions give This Terrible Sound a wide range of historical and strategic considerations.
Released in 2000, the game is listed for 2–4 players and can also be played solitaire. Its moderate complexity, variable scenario length, and oversized box make it a flexible choice for players seeking a substantial American Civil War battlefield game.
