About this board game
Three-Dragon Ante: Emperor’s Gambit is a fantasy card game for 2–6 players, with a typical play time of 30 minutes. Set in a Dungeons & Dragons-style bar, it has players compete for gold through a series of clever card-playing hands.
The goal is to have the most gold when the first player runs out. In a two-player game, you must bankrupt your opponent; in larger games, you may need to support another player temporarily while working toward the richest position.
Each hand begins when a player places an Ante card in the centre. The highest-value Ante determines how much gold everyone contributes to the pot, and its player starts the first of three card-playing rounds. Later rounds are started by whoever played the highest-value card in the previous round.
- Play cards to form the best set, or Flight, you can manage.
- Use each card’s numerical value and power to shape your strategy.
- Trigger a card’s power only when its value is lower than or equal to the card just played.
The central tension is choosing when to play high cards to win the Ante and when to play lower cards to activate useful abilities. Those powers can improve your hand for a later round, making every card choice part of a larger plan.
Three-Dragon Ante: Emperor’s Gambit can be played on its own or combined with the original Three-Dragon Ante card set. It includes new cards, additional rules, and complete rules for the original game, while its fantasy setting also makes it suitable as a sub-plot within a D&D campaign.
