About this board game

Thunder At Dawn: The Battle of Wilson’s Creek (August 10, 1861) is a 1–2 player regimental-scale simulation of the Civil War’s first major battle in the Trans-Mississippi theater, with a play time of 480 minutes.

Set near Springfield, Missouri, the game recreates the clash between one Union army and two Rebel forces at “Bloody Hill.” The commanders are inexperienced, the armies are green, and difficult decisions shape the battle. Union General Lyon divided his smaller force, while disagreements between Generals McCulloch and Price affected the Rebel response.

The game uses the Blind Swords chit-pull system to create an immersive tactical contest without the heavy rules often associated with this style of wargame. Each chit pull presents new possibilities and forces players to make difficult choices based on limited intelligence and the situation at that moment.

Three forms of uncertainty define the experience: fog of war, friction of war, and fortunes of war. The Union begins with a successful surprise attack, but ammunition shortages, the loss of General Lyon, and the changing battlefield can turn early momentum into withdrawal. A “What If” scenario gives the Union player an opportunity to revise the strategy and pursue a different result.
