About this board game
Tragedy Looper is a scenario-based deduction game for 2–4 players that takes about 120 minutes, with one player as the mastermind and one to three as protagonists.
Each scenario uses four location boards and a selection of character cards. The characters have hidden roles, such as serial killer, conspiracy theorist, or friend, while the scenario establishes pre-set tragedies including murder and suicide. The protagonists must work out who is responsible and understand the conditions that cause each tragedy.
Each day, the players and the mastermind play three face-down cards onto the characters. Once revealed, these cards can move characters between locations or change their paranoia and goodwill stats. At the end of the day, a scheduled tragedy occurs if its conditions are met. These conditions may depend on particular characters, their statistics, or whether they are together in a specific location.
When a tragedy occurs, the protagonists loop back in time and restart the scenario. Information gained from each attempt helps them deduce the hidden roles and the reasons behind the events, while the mastermind works to keep the crucial details concealed.
- Scenario-based deduction: Investigate hidden roles and pre-set tragedies.
- Time-loop structure: Restart the scenario after tragedies and use what you learned.
- Hidden information: Track character movement, paranoia, goodwill, and location-based conditions.
The protagonists win by maintaining the status quo—preventing tragedies from striking key individuals—for a set number of days within a set number of loops. If they fail, the mastermind wins. Originally released in Japan as 惨劇RoopeR in 2011, the first English edition of Tragedy Looper followed in 2014.
