About this board game
Utopian Rummy is a two-player game designed for 30 minutes, in which players compete to draft more prosperous Jobs into their Societies. Each Job brings a special ability to use immediately and scores points at the end of the Age.
The game’s decisions begin with choosing which Jobs to take. Some Jobs, such as Hunters and Farmers, add more cards to your hand. Others, including Elders and Story Tellers, score large amounts of points.
Every turn follows a simple three-phase structure:
- Explore: View the top two cards of the Draw Deck and add one to your hand.
- Expand: Play Jobs into your Society. Each Job must first be Initiated by playing a set of three matching Jobs.
- Decay: Discard.
This framework keeps play moving while creating meaningful choices about which Jobs to draft, when to Initiate them, and how to use their abilities. The contrast between Jobs that expand your hand and Jobs that deliver substantial scoring gives each decision a clear purpose.
Utopian Rummy was designed to play fast, offer many interesting decisions, and simply be fun to play. Its focused two-player format makes the turn structure easy to follow while leaving room for different approaches to building a Society.
Originally released in 2009, Utopian Rummy was later re-implemented as Plato 3000.
