About this board game

Velikiye Luki: Stalingrad of the North is a two-player game about the Battle of Velikiye Luki, playable in approximately 120 minutes.

Fought during the winter campaign of 1942–1943, the battle formed part of the northern pincer of the Rzhev-Sychevka Strategic Offensive, also known as Operation Mars. The Soviet objective was to liberate Velikiye Luki and cut the north–south rail line west of the city.

Rather than assaulting the town directly, Soviet forces advanced through difficult terrain to its north and south. Despite heavy losses, they cut the land connections to Velikiye Luki, trapping the German garrison inside.

  • Encircled garrison: German formations are surrounded and ordered to hold out.
  • Relief efforts: German counterattacks seek to open a route to the city.
  • Rail-line objective: Soviet attempts to seize the rail lines at Novosokolniki face determined opposition.
  • Winter campaign setting: The struggle unfolds amid difficult terrain and repeated assaults.

Hitler demanded that the surrounded formations hold their positions while relief forces attacked toward Velikiye Luki. The garrison resisted repeated Soviet assaults, while Soviet efforts to reach the main objective at Novosokolniki were frustrated by German counterattacks.

In late December, a German attempt to reach the city encountered stubborn Soviet defense and was halted. The garrison finally surrendered on January 16. In Velikiye Luki: Stalingrad of the North, this dramatic confrontation is presented as a focused two-player study of encirclement, defense, relief, and contested objectives.
