About this board game
Volleyball High is a tactical volleyball game for 2–4 players that plays in about 25 minutes. Choose a school team and compete to score 2 points using spatial control, hand management, teamwork, and carefully timed attacks.
Inspired by the Japanese anime Haikyu, the game features distinctive school teams known for different specialties, powerful individuals with signature moves, and a coach for each school who can assist the team with abilities. It is the second title in Medieval Lords’ trilogy of sports games and the spiritual successor to Sweet Spot, although its mechanisms and gameplay are completely different.
Players use five card types to move the ball between their own members and send it over the net:
- Set, Bump, Dig, Serve, and Spike cards each have a distance range and Hit value.
- When an attack crosses the net, the opponent must first discard cards with enough DEF to defend against its Hit value.
- The opponent then chooses a member to receive the ball, discarding additional cards when that member must move to reach it.
- Finally, that member plays a card to hit the ball and becomes exhausted.
Passing the ball between teammates increases the team’s synergy meter. Its value determines the Energy gained and the number of cards replenished when the ball is sent across the net. Exhausted members can be restored by discarding 2 cards, while exhausting all 6 members triggers a free team-wide refresh.
A front-to-front setup creates a Heavy attack, turning defense into a press-your-luck decision. The defender chooses how many cards to commit, then the attacker randomly draws that many cards from the defender’s hand without looking. In 2v2 mode, each player controls 3 specific members of the same team, making coordination essential.
