About this board game

Volterra is a two-player tactical board game with a playing time of about 20 minutes, inspired by medieval building contests in Tuscany. Rival families compete to raise towers, but victory depends on tactical skill rather than wealth.

In the game, pieces are stacked on top of one another step by step, creating towers that rise throughout play. Your counters do their utmost to defend towers of your own color while you seek opportunities to build upward and challenge your opponent.

  • Players: 2
  • Playing time: approximately 20 minutes
  • Core challenge: stack pieces, protect your color, and compete for the highest tower
  • Changing battlefield: construction continues across a shrinking play area

The available space steadily contracts as construction continues, making each decision increasingly important. The board develops into a contest of positioning and defense, with the towers themselves becoming the visible result of each player’s choices.

Play continues until no counters can move. At that point, the central question of Volterra is settled: who is sitting atop the highest tower? With its focused two-player format and short playing time, the game presents a compact contest built around stacking, movement, and careful tactical judgment.

The theme recalls the surviving “dynasty towers” of Tuscan towns, where powerful families once competed to construct ever-higher buildings. Here, however, the height of a tower comes from the master builder’s skill at reading the shrinking play area and defending the right pieces at the right time.
