About this board game
Vulcanus is a 2019 board game for 2–4 players, with an approximately 80-minute battle between one monster player and 1–3 cooperating human teams.
A ruthless giant has erupted from the crater of Mount Fuji. As Vulcanus advances toward Tokyo, it pours lava from its body, evolves and grows, and leaves a path of scorched earth across Japan.
The monster player moves closer to victory by creating casualties, burning areas, and destroying landmarks. Human players must work together through the Monster Disaster Emergency Headquarters to contain the catastrophe and repel the threat.
- Evacuate citizens from danger
- Extinguish fires and limit the spread of destruction
- Deploy the Self-Defense Forces
- Conduct investigations to develop the response
Research is central to the human strategy. The more research the teams conduct, the more options become available, eventually allowing them to manage the situation with a direct attack on the monster.
However, Vulcanus can detect human operations and disrupt carefully prepared plans. Every decision contributes to the unfolding disaster: will Tokyo perish beneath the monster’s advance, or can the human teams bring Vulcanus down? With one player controlling the evolving threat and the others coordinating the response, Vulcanus creates a tense struggle between destruction and survival.
