About this board game

Where Eagles Dare: The Battle for Hell’s Highway is a two-player, company-level wargame about the 101st Airborne Division’s desperate fight to keep the vital route to Arnhem open during Operation Market Garden. With playing times ranging from 2 to 40 hours, it can be played as a standalone game or linked with The Devil’s Cauldron to recreate the entire Market Garden campaign.

The outnumbered American airborne forces must race from one emergency to the next while German units threaten the fragile lifeline later known as Hell’s Highway. A special off-map movement system allows German forces to shift between battlefield sectors, while new terrain types and special rules give the battles their own character.

Scenarios cover several famous historical actions, from the breakout at Joe’s Bridge and the capture of Aalst and Eindhoven to the Battle of Best, the battles of Veghel, and the preemptive American attacks at Heeswijk and Schijndel. Four versions of the grand campaign provide additional ways to experience the operation.

  • Company-level units on hexes representing 500 meters
  • Game turns covering two hours of daylight or 8–12 hours of nighttime
  • Five full-color mapsheets and 1,936 large counters
  • Rules and counters supporting links with The Devil’s Cauldron
  • Medium complexity and medium solitaire playability

With its detailed maps, historical scenarios, and atmospheric events—including the German air raid on Eindhoven—Where Eagles Dare highlights the small decisions and unexpected incidents that shaped the battle. It also includes errata and campaign counters for The Devil’s Cauldron, making it a substantial addition to the Grand Tactical Series.
