About this board game

Wongar is a strategic board game for 3–5 players with an approximately 90-minute playing time, released in 2000. Players compete across several square-ish areas, each with its own draw pile, selecting cards that provide the actions they want to take.

Those actions center on placing and manipulating three types of control markers. Each marker type scores whenever its area is scored, making the placement of influence an important part of planning. Players must watch the board while deciding which available actions will best develop their position.

Areas are scored when either the Ancestor or Elder token appears in that area. Moving one of these tokens can also provide a valuable advantage: the player who moves it gains either first-player status or additional scoring cards. These choices connect movement, turn order, and future scoring opportunities.

  • Choose action cards from area-specific draw piles.
  • Place and manipulate three kinds of control markers.
  • Trigger area scoring through the Ancestor and Elder tokens.
  • Use scoring cards to affect control markers nearby.
  • Watch scorpion cards increase scoring values as the game progresses.

After an area is scored, the players involved use scoring cards to manipulate control markers in the surrounding vicinity. This gives each scoring event consequences beyond the area itself and keeps neighboring positions connected.

Scattered throughout the decks, scorpion cards drive Wongar toward its conclusion while increasing the value of later scorings. The result is a game where control, timing, token movement, and escalating rewards all matter as players shape the board and prepare for the final stages.
