About this board game
Wordsearch is a word-building board game for 2 to 4 players, ages 8 and up, with an approximately 45-minute play time. Released in 1988, it challenges players to rearrange letters and create a single word on each turn.
To set up, randomly place the 96 wooden letter tiles face up on every gray circle of the gameboard. Leave the four red circles in the center empty, choose a starting player, and keep paper and a pencil nearby for scoring.
On the active player’s turn, one or more letters are slid to form a word. Every moved letter must travel in a straight line—horizontally, vertically, or diagonally—for one or more spaces. Letters cannot jump over other letters or change direction.
- Each moved letter must be part of the word being formed.
- Letters may not be moved aside simply to let another letter pass.
- The word can include letters that were not moved.
- Words may read forwards or backwards, horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
- Only one word may be formed and scored per turn.
After forming a word, add together the values of its letters and multiply that total by the number of letters in the word. This scoring system rewards both the value of the letters used and the length of the completed word.
With its open central spaces, sliding movements, and multiple directions for word formation, Wordsearch combines spatial planning with vocabulary-building decisions. Players must consider which letters to move, how the board’s arrangement affects possible words, and how to maximize each scoring opportunity.
