About this board game

WWII Commander, Volume Two: Market-Garden is a fast-playing World War II area-based game for 1–2 players, with sessions lasting roughly 2 to 4 hours. It recreates the Allied airborne and ground offensive in Holland during September 1944.

One player commands the Allied forces, while the other leads the German Army. Allied airborne divisions must seize and hold key objectives along a highway corridor across rivers and canals, giving ground forces time to break through the German front and advance toward the industrial heart of Germany.

The German player faces a different challenge: delay the ground advance, trade space for time, and attack the airborne forces trapped behind the lines. German infantry and armor can approach from multiple directions, forcing the Allied player to advance aggressively without becoming cut off.

At the heart of the system is constant player interaction. Players take turns deciding which units to activate and where to attack or defend, creating meaningful tactical choices within a simple rules framework. The design is accessible as an introduction to war games, while its decisions remain challenging to master.

  • Airborne landings and objectives behind enemy lines
  • Variable weather and polder terrain effects
  • Concentric attacks and German off-map movement
  • River assaults and ferry movement

Each game turn represents half a day, with spaces covering approximately 5 kilometers and units representing regiments and brigades. WWII Commander: Volume Two – Market-Garden supports solitaire play as well as head-to-head games, with no hidden units, and either side can achieve victory at different stages of the campaign.
