About this board game
Yokai Septet is a strategic trick-taking card game for 2–4 players, with games lasting about 45 minutes. Players take on the roles of rival Onmyoji competing to capture Yokai and protect their village from supernatural disasters.
Each turn, players play one card from their hands according to trick-taking rules. Once everyone has played, the player who played the strongest card matching the lead suit takes all the cards in that turn. Play continues until a round-ending condition is reached.
The central challenge is choosing when to pursue valuable targets and when to prepare for the next trick. Your objective is to capture high-scoring Boss Yokai, while competing against the other Onmyoji for control of the round.
- Four players: play as two teams of two.
- Three players: compete individually.
- Round victory: capture at least four Boss Yokai in a four-player game, or at least three in a three-player game.
- Overall victory: score points from captured Boss Yokai and reach the game’s chosen end condition.
At the end of each round, the winner scores points based on the Boss Yokai they captured. New rounds are played until someone reaches 2 points in the basic game or 7 points in the advanced game.
With 49 cards across seven suits, scoring tokens, player aids, and a lead player card, Yokai Septet offers a focused battle of card play and timing. Its folklore-inspired setting gives every trick a clear purpose: capture more Yokai than your rivals and become the greatest Onmyoji.
