About this board game

New World: A Carcassonne Game is a tile-laying game for 2–5 players, with play lasting about 45 minutes. Players begin as early settlers on the east coast of the United States and work westward across a growing landscape.

On each turn, a player lays a tile to expand the countryside, building towns, roads, and other features. The player may then place one of their tokens on the tile, claiming that feature in the hope of completing it and scoring points.

  • Lay tiles to develop towns, roads, and other parts of the countryside.
  • Place tokens to claim features and score when they are completed.
  • Manage the westward movement of the surveyors before unfinished features are passed.

The defining twist in New World: A Carcassonne Game is the pair of surveyors who drive exploration inexorably westward. As players score points, the surveyors advance across the landscape, creating a steadily approaching deadline for every claimed feature.

Features must be completed before the surveyors pass them by. If they are not, the player’s token is removed from the board without scoring, making timing just as important as choosing where to build and claim.

Players must balance the chance to earn points against the risk of leaving tokens behind as the frontier moves on. Once the game ends, the player with the most points wins.
