About this board game

Giro d’Italia: The Game is a cycling race board game for 2–10 players, with an approximate play time of 120 minutes. Released in 2009, it brings the famous Italian bicycle race to the table through route hexagons, rider teams, events, and a general classification.

The centenary Giro route passes through important Italian cities including Venice, Milan, Rome, Naples, Florence, Boulogne, and Genova. The race puts cyclists under pressure from the first week on the Dolomites, with the field including Lance Armstrong on his first Giro.

Giro d’Italia: The Game is a spin-off of Leader 1 and re-implements that game. Its components support a multi-stage race setting with 21 route hexagons, a dedicated general classification hexagon, and 15 riders divided among five teams of three.

  • Route hexagons for building the race track
  • A peloton and peloton leader token
  • Peloton and events twelve-sided dice
  • Feed zone tiles in yellow, red, and green
  • General classification tokens, bonus time tokens, and mountain climb category tokens
  • Special cards and an energy table block

The game also includes reminder tables and tokens for feed zones, bonus time, and mountain climb categories. These elements give the race a distinct structure centered on the route, the peloton, energy, and standings.

For players familiar with Leader 1, this edition shifts the focus to the most famous Italian bicycle race. It is also a stand-alone expansion for Leader 1: Hell of the North, offering a Giro-themed racing experience with iconic cities, demanding mountain terrain, and a competitive general classification.
