About this board game
Gladiator is a game of man-to-man combat for 2–6 players, with contests taking about 30 minutes. First released in 1981, it recreates the savage spectacle of ancient Rome, where matched gladiators fight to weaken, wound, or kill their opponents.
Each player selects a gladiator with ratings that define his various fighting skills. Movement is simultaneous and based on pre-plotted moves, turning every approach and retreat into a test of prediction. The aim is to gain a positional advantage before closing into striking range.
Once combat begins, players choose combinations of attacks and defensive measures. Every decision matters as fighters attempt to exploit an opening, withstand an assault, and survive the desperate contest. There can be only one victor in the arena, while a fallen gladiator may receive mercy only at the Emperor’s whim.
- Heavy gladiators: shield-bearing fighters with considerable armour.
- Light gladiators: warriors protected by a smaller selection of armour.
- Retiarius: a lightly armoured gladiator who uses a net and trident, creating distinct tactical challenges.
Different equipment and fighting styles give each gladiator a distinctive presence on the arena floor. Heavy protection may help a fighter endure attacks, while the retiarius must use his specialized weapons and different approach to survive.
With simultaneous movement, tactical attacks, and the ever-present possibility of a final decision by the Emperor, Gladiator captures the tension of a fight where bravery alone is not enough. Put on an exciting show, outthink your adversary, and hope your next exchange is not your last.
