About this board game
Lion Rampant: Medieval Wargaming Rules is a two-player medieval miniature wargame with a typical play time of 240 minutes. Designed for 28mm miniatures but playable at any scale, it recreates skirmish battles between armies of 4–6 units per side.
Each unit consists of either 12 foot miniatures or 6 mounted miniatures. Rather than controlling an entire force automatically, players must activate their units by rolling dice, making command decisions a central part of every battle.
The chances of passing an activation roll improve when you choose orders suited to a unit’s troop type. This creates a clear connection between battlefield role and command decisions: knights are more willing to charge, while archers are easier to command to shoot than to launch a charge.
- Medieval miniature wargaming rules for two players
- Intended for 28mm miniatures, but playable at any scale
- Armies of 4–6 units per side
- Units of 12 foot or 6 mounted miniatures
- Dice-driven activation shaped by troop-appropriate orders
The rules are intentionally simple and abstract some aspects of medieval battle in favor of easy gameplay. That approach keeps the focus on choosing suitable orders, managing activations, and directing a compact force across a skirmish battlefield.
With its combination of miniature battles, dice-based commands, and distinct behavior for different troop types, Lion Rampant offers a straightforward framework for medieval army engagements at any miniature scale.
