Federation & Empire

About this board game

Federation & Empire is a strategic empire game for 2–8 players with a listed play time of 3,000 minutes, set in the Star Fleet Universe. Players command one or more races and replay “historical” situations drawn from the galactic politics of the future.

Designed as a standalone game, it does not require Star Fleet Battles. The two games are closely related, however: Star Fleet Battles can resolve some or all of the tactical battles, while Federation & Empire can serve as a campaign system for it.

The original edition was published by Task Force Games in 1986. A revised “Deluxe” edition followed in 1993, replacing the original release with a revised rule book, additional counter sheets, and player aids including a battle board and player folio. Further rule revisions followed in 2000 and 2010.

The 2010 edition completely redid the counter sheets and revised the rulebook to incorporate a decade of errata and rulings, while improving integration with expansions released during that period. The game’s broader series includes:
