About this board game

Star Trek Customizable Card Game (Second Edition) is a two-player customizable card game released in 2002, with an approximate play time of 45 minutes. It reinvents the original Star Trek customizable card game with a revised cost system and a faster approach to handling dilemmas.

At the beginning of each turn, a player receives seven counters. Equipment, events, personnel, and ships display a cost from 0 to 9, and playing one requires spending counters equal to that cost. Interrupts are the exception: they have no cost and are treated as 0-cost cards.

The game’s dilemma system is another major change from the first edition. Rather than using a lengthy seed phase, which could last upwards of 15 minutes, the second edition creates dilemma combinations on the fly. This replaces the earlier setup procedure with a method focused on constructing combinations during play.

  • Cost-based play: Manage seven counters each turn to play many of the cards in your deck.
  • Dynamic dilemmas: Construct dilemma combinations during the game instead of relying on a lengthy seed phase.
  • Revised design priorities: Effects generally aim for consistency and equitable power among similarly costed cards.

While the first edition sometimes aimed to represent specific moments from the Star Trek universe, Star Trek Customizable Card Game (Second Edition) places greater priority on consistent gameplay. As a result, some card effects may be purely conceptual and lack the “Trek sense” found in the original edition, while generally remaining more equitable alongside effects with similar costs.
