About this board game

Maelstrom is a 2–4 player fantasy battle game from 2001, with play lasting about 60 minutes. Players take the roles of Masters of the Void, using the powers of the Vortex to recruit allies, enslave lands and beasts, and compete for control of the battlefield.

Designed by Diskwars creators Tom Jolly and Christian T. Petersen, the game uses a distinctive hexagonal tile game field that grows throughout play. Players add allies, lands, and relics to fill the void surrounding the Vortex, shaping the foundation of the battlefield with every strategically placed tile.

Maelstrom combines fantasy battles, magic, and resource management in a fast-moving standalone experience for 2–4 players. Powerful creatures and engines of destruction are drawn into the conflict as the Masters struggle to establish dominance over the changing battlefield.

  • More than 150 tiles across 54 flats
  • All fixed and standard flats from the Vortex game
  • A self-contained, non-collectible game
  • Compatible with Vortex booster packs for players who want to expand their collection

This edition contains the fixed and standard contents of Vortex, but does not include events or relics, which were rare in the original collectible format. Events can add to the experience, but they are not required: Maelstrom is complete without further purchases.

For players who enjoy tactical fantasy conflict and battlefields that develop through play, Maelstrom offers a substantial fixed-format way to experience the Vortex system. The Maelstrom Expansion Pack provides additional content for the game.
