About this board game
King of the Tabletop is a kingdom-building board game for 2–4 players, with an approximate play time of 180 minutes. Each player controls a realm assembled from land tiles, castles, settlements, people, and creatures.
The aim is to achieve a required amount of prestige. Prestige reflects several aspects of a kingdom, including the size of the realm, the contents of its treasury, and the number of special heroic characters living within it.
The game’s kingdoms are made up of different terrains, including mountains and forests. Alongside these lands, players oversee castles and settlements while their kingdoms are inhabited by people and creatures.
- Control a kingdom built from varied terrain tiles.
- Develop a realm containing castles and settlements.
- Account for treasury, kingdom size, and special heroic characters when pursuing prestige.
- Seek possession of a Grand Muniment, described as a very large castle.
The Grand Muniment is a notable element of the prestige goal, adding possession of a very large castle to the qualities that define a successful kingdom. Together, the realm’s size, wealth, heroic inhabitants, and castle holdings determine progress toward the game’s objective.
King of the Tabletop was originally published in Dragon #77. Clarifications appeared in Dragon #78, with an additional rules clarification later published in the “Out On a Limb” column in Dragon #81.
With its focus on kingdoms, varied lands, settlements, inhabitants, treasury, heroic characters, and prestige, the game presents a substantial tabletop experience for a small group of 2–4 players.
