About this board game

Risk & Castle Risk is a two-game military strategy experience for 2–6 players, with approximately 120 minutes of play time. The box combines the classic world-map conflict of Risk with Castle Risk, a markedly different battle for enemy castles.

In Castle Risk, each player begins with one castle and aims to capture every opponent’s castle, becoming the last player remaining. Combat uses the familiar Risk-style dice battles, but armies are received at the end of a turn rather than at the beginning, except when a Reinforcements card is played.

Castle Risk has no territory cards, and armies are not awarded according to the number of individual territories controlled. Instead, players gain armies for controlled regions and for banners in their castle. Each player begins with one banner and claims the banners from captured castles.

  • General and Marshall cards modify dice results.
  • Admiral cards enable attacks that would otherwise be unavailable.
  • Diplomats create temporary non-aggression pacts.
  • Spy cards let you inspect another player’s cards while discarding one, and can defend against another Spy.
  • Reinforcements provide armies at the start of a turn.

The original Risk experience places armies across a map of the world and invites players to attack opposing positions, preferably with superior numbers. Battles are resolved through simple dice rolling that emphasizes attrition, while reinforcements can come from collecting sets of cards.

Across the two games, tactics can range from carefully planned offensives to hit-and-run attacks. Deploy Spies, Generals, Diplomats, Marshalls, Reinforcements, and the Admiral, then use your Hidden Armies once during the game before rolling to determine each battle.
