About this board game

Materia Prima: The Alchemists Guild is a competitive sandbox game for 2–4 players, with sessions lasting about 90 minutes. Set in a medieval world where mysticism and science meet, it challenges alchemists to research recipes, mine resources, and create the Philosopher’s Stone.

Each alchemist has a distinct history, abilities, and secret quest. These hidden motivations shape the path to victory, but competitors may exploit any weakness they discover. The game ends when an alchemist uses the Philosopher’s Stone to fulfill their quest.

Players move across a modular game board made of hexes, taking a number of actions based on their current location. Possible actions include moving, fighting, dismantling, buying, and transmuting. As equipment and Homunculi are transmuted, an alchemist’s available actions and capabilities can grow throughout the game.

  • Explore and research: Search cities and old libraries for lost recipes and alchemical knowledge.
  • Mine and manage resources: Gather elements from the board, then improve or transmute them.
  • Craft powerful creations: Transmute equipment, Homunculi, and ultimately the Philosopher’s Stone.
  • Fight and control territory: Use dice rolling in combat and guide Homunculi into battle while creating a presence across the board.

Its turn-and-action system combines with resource-based crafting to create a flexible strategic experience. You might focus on mining and recipes, confront enemies with sword and shield, or use alchemy and helpers to misdirect your rivals.

In Materia Prima, every decision can shape your alchemist’s rise toward the Philosopher’s Stone. Gather wisely, craft carefully, and keep your secret quest protected until the final transmutation.
