About this board game
Strafexpedition 1916 is a battalion-level mountain warfare game for 2–4 players, with an average play time of 120 minutes. Its impulse system creates a high level of interaction, while brigade manoeuvres and commander initiative keep the battlefield in motion.
Success depends on more than launching attacks. Players must decide when to keep units and brigades in reserve, how to commit them to battle, and how to manage the wearing down of troop morale. Reduced morale affects combat efficiency and can ultimately force units to surrender.
Logistics Points act as the fuel for military activity. Attacks, artillery bombardments, and trench construction all draw on this limited resource, making logistical decisions central to every operation.
- Bayonet assaults, machine-gun fire, trenches, forts, and heavy artillery bombardments
- Snow-covered high mountains, fighting at elevations above 2,000 meters, and crags that restrict manoeuvre
- Austro-Hungarian heavy guns, including Gudrun, Barbara, Lang Georg, and 42 cm and 30.5 cm mortars
- Kaiserjäger, Alpini, Landesschützen, and Bersaglieri units
Fast counterattacks can exploit an opening, but terrain, morale, reserves, and available Logistics Points all influence whether an advance succeeds. The game includes two 22-by-34-inch battlefield maps, 840 die-cut counters, charts and tables, dice, standard rules, and scenario instructions.
Strafexpedition 1916 comes with four small campaign scenarios and one large campaign scenario, offering several ways to experience its contested alpine battlefield and tightly connected systems.
