About this board game

Bohnanza: 20 Jahre is a bean-trading and planting game for 3–5 players, with a playing time of about 45 minutes. Released in 2017 to celebrate Bohnanza’s twentieth anniversary, it uses the familiar rules while adding the spring bean.

Players begin with a hand of bean cards, but the order of those cards cannot be changed. Each turn, the first card must be planted in one of the player’s fields, and the second card may also be planted. Every field can contain only one type of bean, so deciding when to expand a field—and when to harvest it—is central to play.

After planting, the active player reveals two cards from the deck. These cards, along with cards from players’ hands, can be traded with other players. Cards may be traded from anywhere in a hand, creating opportunities to improve future turns, but every traded card must be planted rather than returned to a hand.

To finish a turn, the player draws cards and places them at the back of their hand. When a field is harvested, its bean cards provide Talers according to the beanometer: the more beans of that type in the field, the more Talers are earned. Some cards are kept to represent coins, while the rest return to the discard pile for later recycling.

The special spring bean rewards a harvest of two spring beans. The player draws cards equal to one more than the number of players, plants one, and passes the remaining cards around the table so each other player can do the same before the final card returns to the active player as a Taler.
