About this board game

Clay-O-Rama is a silly modeling-clay game for 2–12 players, with play lasting about 30 minutes. Players create their own “claydonian” creatures, assign them powers, and set them loose in a playful contest of movement, attacks, and survival.

Each creature is made from clay, giving every player a hands-on role in shaping the action. Creatures move in “hand breaths,” with movement depending on the number of lates they have. The game combines simple materials with imaginative creature creation and deliberately outrageous challenges.

Attacks in Clay-O-Rama use the physical properties of the clay and the creativity of the players. The rules include powers such as the drop, where a creature is dropped from 3 feet to see whether it survives, and the bowl, which uses a creature like a bowling ball.

  • The blob of death: if you hit, smash the creature with your fist.
  • Opponent as missile: use an opponent in another inventive attack.
  • Creature powers: assign abilities to your handmade claydonian creations.

To play, you need the rules, pencils, paper, dice, and clay. The game was published in Dragon Magazine issue 125, and its unusual physical challenges make the table part of the play area.

Released in 1987, Clay-O-Rama offers a compact game built around clay, dice, and humorous destructive powers. It was expanded by Clay-O-Rama: Claydonia Conquers the World!, providing a further title in the Clay-O-Rama setting.
