About this board game
Overlord is a two-player operational wargame of the Allied invasion and breakout from Normandy, designed for an approximately 180-minute play time and released in 1973.
The game covers the fighting in Northwestern France during June, July, and August 1944. It places players in the central struggle of the campaign: the Allies must clear the Germans from Normandy in preparation for the drive across France to the Rhine, while the Germans rely on careful defense, tenacious holding actions, and powerful counterattacks.
Overlord focuses on three defining phases of the campaign:
- The Cobra Breakout
- The German Mortain Counteroffensive
- The Battle of the Falaise Pocket
Each period has its own victory conditions and initial setup locations, allowing players to recreate the distinct character of the campaign through a series of one-month games. These separate scenarios present the changing military situation as the Allied advance develops and German resistance responds.
The Allies face a desperate race against time, seeking to break out of the Normandy peninsula and open the route toward the Rhine. For the German side, the challenge is to hold ground, absorb pressure, and strike back at the right moment.
A complete campaign game is also possible, linking the three months into a broader simulation of the invasion, breakout, counteroffensive, and the collapse of German armor in the West. With its historical focus and campaign structure, Overlord offers a concentrated way to explore one of the decisive operations of 1944.
