About this board game
Johnny Reb III is a grand regimental tactics game of the American Civil War for 2 players, with an approximate play time of 360 minutes. Designed for miniatures ranging from 10mm to 25mm, it focuses on recreating battles at a large regimental scale.
The game includes the rules set and four reference cards for 15mm miniatures. Players must supply and paint their own miniatures, making the physical armies part of the preparation for each battle. Reference cards for other miniature scales are available separately for an additional cost.
Rather than limiting players to a fixed set of battles, Johnny Reb III encourages research into the American Civil War period. Players can investigate historical engagements and recreate their own selected battles. Some scenarios are available for purchase, while researching and building a battle from the period provides another way to play.
- Grand regimental American Civil War tactics
- Support for 10mm, 15mm, and 25mm miniatures
- Rules and four 15mm reference cards included
- Player-supplied and player-painted miniatures required
- Historical battles can be researched and recreated
Johnny Reb III is also notably different from the earlier games in the series. The first edition was published by Adventure Games in 1983, followed by a GDW second edition with minor changes in 1988 and the scenario book To the Sound of the Guns that same year.
Published by John Hill in 1996, the third edition introduced major changes to both scale and game mechanisms. These included a 1″:50 scale rather than 1″:40 yards, a ratio of 1:30 men rather than 1:20, and artillery batteries rather than sections.
