About this board game

Melee is a fast, highly interactive strategy game for 2–4 players, played in about 20 minutes. In a kingdom without a clear heir, local barons and countesses compete to prove they are the strongest and richest claimant to the throne.

Each player begins with a Castle, one unit of foot soldiers, and 15 gold coins. The game opens with a drafting session where players purchase units—including soldiers, knights, camps, and catapults—and bid on special abilities that can improve income, attacks, or other options.

The main game lasts four turns, representing the seasons of the year. During each turn, players simultaneously choose one of three actions:

  • Tax to gather resources
  • Build new units to strengthen your forces
  • Move and attack to challenge an occupied area

Every turn ends with players collecting income, but gold remains in tight supply. It pays for both new units and attacks, creating a constant choice between saving for future opportunities and spending generously to improve your chances right now.

When you attack, you move a unit into an occupied area and secretly decide how much gold to spend motivating your troops. The defender must guess your expenditure. If the guess is wrong, the attack succeeds; if it is correct, the attack fails and you lose your unit. Either way, the gold is spent, making every assault a meaningful gamble.

You can win immediately by capturing an opposing Castle, or finish the year with the most land and gold. The available abilities change from game to game, offering varied strategies and strong replayability. In Melee, a bold attack on a poorly defended Castle can end the contest suddenly.
