About this board game

De Ontembare Stad is a family board game for 2–5 players, with a playing time of about 75 minutes. As one of five Grandmasters leading an order of knighthood, you help a small medieval town grow into a large citadel of importance.

Players guide the construction of a citadel filled with beautiful houses and buildings. Your progress can be influenced throughout the game, while your opponents develop their own positions and compete for the strongest influence.

A distinctive feature is the Influence Card, which gives you an opportunity to counter your opponents. You can expand by taking new territories, take over territories controlled by other Grandmasters, or create disorder in the citadel by burning down an important building on the board.

  • Develop a medieval town into a prominent citadel.
  • Compete for influence against rival Grandmasters.
  • Use Influence Cards to counter opponents.
  • Take new territories or take over those held by others.
  • Disrupt the citadel by burning down an important building.

The winner is striving to hold the strongest influence and become king. For experienced strategy players, the strategic variant adds a Grand Power in one of four different development areas. It also increases the importance of isolating territories, adding another layer to the struggle for control.

Originally published in Dutch, De Ontembare Stad also has a German version. An English edition is not available, although the publisher provides rules and card translations on its website. The game is expanded by De Ontembare Stad: Het Verraad.
