About this board game
Iwo Jima: Hell On Earth is a solo board game for 1 player, with an approximately 120-minute play time, that places you in command of US forces during the 36-day Battle of Iwo Jima.
Your mission is to conquer the island, secure its three airfields, and capture the iconic Mount Suribachi. The battle unfolds across nine turns, each representing approximately four days, with victory assessed at the end of Turn 9.
Each turn moves through weather, bombardment, movement, attacks, Japanese raids, command, and organization. Weather can affect bombardment points and movement, while US forces must decide when to rally, advance normally, or use strategic movement. Command Points can support reinforcements, unit deployment, and special command markers.
- Earn Victory Points by eliminating Japanese units, capturing key objectives on time, and causing Japanese surrender.
- Lose Victory Points through excessive Special Orders or heavy US casualties.
- Balance regiments used for direct assaults with combat support from flamethrowers, tanks, and artillery.
- Resolve attacks against hidden Japanese units with a chit-pull system featuring defenses, support, Banzai attacks, and tunnel redeployments.
Japanese forces can bombard, launch limited raids, redeploy through tunnels, and attempt Banzai attacks, creating uncertainty throughout the campaign. The volcanic ash, fortified positions, and unpredictable resistance reflect the battle’s exceptionally harsh conditions.
At the end of the game, your Victory Point total ranges from a “pen-pushing job” to an “incredible victory.” With its demanding objectives and difficult path to success, Iwo Jima: Hell On Earth emphasizes careful planning, efficient support, and the immense cost of advancing across the island.
