About this board game

Greentown is a city-building board game for 2–4 players, with a playing time of about 60 minutes. Players build attractions in a city that tourists will later move through.

The game board is made of hexes, giving players two ways to develop the city: add entirely new hexes or create new paths on hexes already in play. Various buildings are placed on the tiles, shaping the environment through which the tourists travel.

Player figures move along the paths, but their movement is not completely open-ended. Assignment cards determine which spaces they may use, making route planning and tile placement important parts of the experience.

  • Add new hexes to the board
  • Create paths on existing hexes
  • Place various buildings onto the tiles
  • Move figures according to assignment cards

This combination of modular board development, city attractions, paths, and restricted movement creates a game centered on considering how the different elements fit together. Each addition helps define the city that tourists will eventually pass through.

A four-player play test was reported to have some downtime, while the game was also described as likely to appeal to thinkers. Greentown may therefore suit players who enjoy carefully considering their options as the city takes shape.

Released in 2006 and associated with Essen 2006, Greentown offers a focused setting built around hexes, buildings, paths, and assignment-driven movement.
