About this board game
Star Fleet Battle Manual is a tactical space-combat miniatures wargame for 2–8 players, with games lasting about 90 minutes. Set on a large floor area, it brings starships familiar to fans of the original Star Trek series into a hands-on battle of movement, energy management, and careful aim.
Players plot their moves simultaneously, dividing limited engine energy among movement, shields, and weapons. Once plans are revealed, ships move at the same time, making positioning crucial. Each vessel has separate shield strength on its four sides, while weapons use different firing arcs, so a clever approach can be as important as raw firepower.
Combat gives Star Fleet Battle Manual its distinctive character. Each ship uses a compass card featuring a central silhouette. To fire, a player estimates the correct angle, stretches a string from the center of the card, and hopes the line intersects the chosen opponent’s silhouette. This unusual aiming system rewards spatial judgment and makes every attack a physical test of accuracy.
- Simultaneous movement and combat
- Limited energy allocation between movement, shields, and weapons
- Independent shield strength across four ship sides
- Manual angle estimation using compass cards and string
- Damage tracked across different starship capabilities
Damage is recorded against individual capabilities, allowing ships to become damaged or crippled during battle. Different weapons and firing angles give races and starships distinctive abilities.
Originally published in 1972 as Star Trek Battle Manual, the game was later released in 1977. A related 1973 title, Alien Space Battle Manual, introduced different alien races and damage rules while allowing the two games to interact.
