About this board game

2491 Planetship is a strategy board game for 2–5 players, played in about 90 minutes. Based on the mechanisms of City of Spies: Estoril 1942, it transports those ideas into a fictional universe filled with rich lore and memorable characters.

Each player captains a planetship—a world-sized spacecraft traveling through the galaxy. After receiving a distress signal from Mothership Alpha, the first and largest planetship, you arrive to find it crumbling and on the brink of exploding. Your mission is to send your finest team into the stricken vessel and rescue its most valuable crew.

Across four rounds, players compete for control of locations aboard Mothership Alpha. The location boards used in each round are selected randomly, creating a different combination of contested areas from game to game. Players begin with the same hand of character tiles, then take turns placing them into the open spaces at the various locations.

  • Randomly selected location boards shape each round.
  • Character tiles are placed into open spaces to compete for control.
  • Each location awards its reward to the player who controls it at the end of the round.
  • Final scores include character points and completed special game objectives.

Every placement contributes to the struggle for rewards, while the limited number of rounds keeps the rescue mission focused. At the end of the fourth round, players total the points from their characters and any special objectives they have completed.

In 2491 Planetship, the player with the most points wins. Its combination of shared starting hands, location control, randomly selected boards, and a dramatic collapsing-ship setting frames a competitive rescue mission in a distinctive science-fiction world.
