About this board game

War Stories: Liberty Road is a two-player World War II wargame set in 1944, where Allied and German commanders direct infantry squads and armored fighting vehicles across modular battlefields.

Each scenario uses mapboards and terrain overlays that shape movement and influence combat. Players receive secret instructions containing hidden deployment details and objectives, creating uncertainty before the fighting begins. The system is designed to be fast and realistic while remaining easy to learn.

As commander, you issue orders to your forces and manage unit blocks containing information that affects movement, combat, and the ability to remain calm under fire. Combat uses a distinctive system that avoids charts and endless modifiers, keeping attention on battlefield decisions.

Asset and event cards add variety without placing a heavy rules burden on the game. Assets provide special equipment, troops, or abilities, including machine guns, infiltration units, and mine-laying. Events introduce unexpected developments such as arriving reinforcements, a gust of wind starting a wildfire, or a damaged vehicle suddenly brewing up.

  • Five double-sided mapboards and 24 double-sided terrain overlays
  • 75 painted wooden blocks with stickers for vehicles and infantry
  • 112 counters for damage, fog of war, units, orders, and ambushes
  • 33 asset cards, 21 event cards, and 24 combat chips with a drawbag
  • German and Allied scenario booklets, plus player screens and aids

With a listed play time of 30 minutes, War Stories: Liberty Road offers compact tactical engagements for two players. The box states 1–2 players, but there is no solitaire system; it is a normal two-player wargame.
