About this board game
Equatorial Clash is a two-player, 120-minute simulation of the conflict between Ecuador and Perú in July 1941. Released in 2022, it focuses on the coastal zone, the main theatre of operations in this important clash between the two countries.
The conflict formed part of a long series of wars, skirmishes, and border conflicts over regions that both Ecuador and Perú considered rightfully theirs. The game presents this history through a map divided into areas, creating a focused setting for military operations and strategic decisions.
During each turn, players alternate taking impulses. In an impulse, a player spends a certain amount of action points to carry out different kinds of activity, balancing military operations with the need to maintain and replenish their forces.
- Move military units across the area-based map.
- Launch combats in the main coastal theatre.
- Replenish depleted units.
- Influence political matters.
The war’s other fronts are represented more abstractly rather than through the central map. Two tracks cover these wider areas: one follows the Macará–Loja axis, while the other represents the Amazonian outposts as a whole.
By combining area movement, combat, unit replenishment, political influence, and front-tracking, Equatorial Clash models both the direct fighting and the broader course of the conflict. Its structure keeps the coastal theatre at the center while ensuring that developments on the other fronts remain part of the overall simulation.
