About this board game
Anno 1452 is a 90-minute board game for 2–4 players about consolidating power in the Holy Roman Empire in 1452. Players compete to earn victory points through a variety of sources while building their positions across a map of territories.
Each turn, players have a limited number of actions. These actions are used to place resources into territories, creating a tense contest over how and where power is developed. The game has similarities to El Grande, but expands on that foundation with several different types of resources to manage.
- Compete for victory points through multiple sources.
- Use limited actions to place resources in map territories.
- Manage several different resource types.
- Undermine other players’ positions in multiple ways.
A standout feature of Anno 1452 is its balancing mechanism. At the end of each turn, the weakest player is crowned king and receives several benefits, giving that player a meaningful opportunity to recover.
The newly crowned king also gains a strong military advantage, helping them secure a better position in the game. This system keeps the struggle for power competitive and makes falling behind a potential source of renewed strength rather than an automatic defeat.
With its combination of territorial resource placement, varied scoring opportunities, player interaction, and built-in balancing, Anno 1452 presents a focused contest for influence in the Holy Roman Empire. Released in 1999, it offers a strategic experience for groups of two to four players.
