About this board game

Alea Iacta Est is a strategic historical wargame for two players, covering the Roman civil wars that destroyed the late Republic and led to the establishment of the Principate.

The game spans more than two decades of Roman history. Its period begins with Caesar’s crossing of the Rubicon with soldiers of the XIII Legion on 12 January, 49 B.C., and ends with Octavianus closing the doors of the Temple of Janus on 11 January, 29 B.C.—an act symbolizing the return of peace.

One player represents Caesar, his allies, partisans, and successors. The other represents their adversaries. The roles may be reversed during the game, allowing the struggle to be experienced from either side.

Alea Iacta Est uses a rules system developed for a different historical period in Imperator, Semper Victor, and Ultimus Romanorum. While the games share an evolving system, their rules are specific to each title and cannot be transferred from one game in the series to another.

The game includes an A1 map, 216 die-cut counters, and a rulebook containing seven scenarios. The 20-page rulebook is provided in either English or French.
