About this board game

Federation Space is a strategic-level science-fiction board wargame for 2–8 players, with games lasting about 120 minutes. Set in the Star Trek universe of the original television series, it puts each player in control of an entire fleet of starships.

Choose one of eight different races from the Star Fleet universe and attempt to destroy the fleets controlled by your opponents. The game supports a general melee, or “free for all,” as well as 26 different scenarios that present a wide range of conflicts.

  • A strategic fleet-level setting in the original Star Trek universe
  • Play for 2–8 players
  • 26 scenarios, including a Klingon rebellion and the death of the Federation
  • Two ways to resolve tactical combat

Combat can be resolved with the game’s included simple system, allowing conflicts to be handled quickly. This option is useful for engagements that are unimportant or heavily weighted toward one side.

For pivotal or closely matched engagements, players can instead use the more detailed Star Fleet Battles rules. This creates a flexible approach to resolving conflicts, combining strategic fleet command with the option for greater tactical detail when it matters most.

Released in 1981, Federation Space offers a large-scale Star Trek fleet conflict with multiple scenarios and a choice between streamlined and detailed combat resolution.
