Twilight Imperium: Third Edition is an epic empire-building board game for 3–6 players, with games lasting about 240 minutes. Released in 2005, it casts players as ancient galactic civilizations competing for the imperial throne through warfare, diplomacy, trade, and technological progression.

The game map is built with geomorphic board tiles, while basic player progress and overall victory are dynamically determined. This creates a strategic experience in which players can refocus their game plans as the struggle for power develops.

Ten possible alien races give the game a range of distinctive advantages and quirks. The Command system manages turn-based activity and limits the size of armies, while also allowing weakened players to recover if they use their cards effectively.

Its strategic structure draws inspiration from several popular games: the governing element recalls Puerto Rico, the map and progress echo Catan, and the Command system improves on the logistical mechanism of Attack!

The rulebook’s designer notes openly acknowledge these inspirations while explaining how they contribute to the updated design. This edition re-implements Twilight Imperium: Second Edition and belongs to the Twilight Imperium series. It was expanded by Shattered Empire and Shards of the Throne, and later re-implemented as Twilight Imperium: Fourth Edition.
