About this expansion
Carcassonne: Mage & Witch is a small expansion for 2–6 players, released in 2012, that adds eight special landscape tiles and two figures that alter scoring in Carcassonne.
At the start of the game, shuffle the eight tiles bearing a mage symbol into the other landscape tiles. When one is drawn, place it according to the standard placement rules. The player must then place or move either the mage or the witch on the playing area, whenever possible.
- Both figures may be placed only on incomplete roads and cities.
- The mage and witch cannot occupy the same road or the same city.
- After placing or moving one figure, the player may optionally place a follower on the newly played tile.
Whenever a road or city containing one of these figures scores, the figure changes the points awarded. The mage adds one point for every tile in the feature, while the witch reduces the feature’s score by half, rounded up. These effects apply both when a feature scores during the game and when it scores at the end.
After the feature scores, place the mage or witch next to the score track. The figure then waits there until another mage tile is drawn. This creates a recurring choice around where to place or move the figures and which incomplete feature may be affected next.
With its eight special tiles and straightforward scoring rules, Carcassonne: Mage & Witch adds a distinct scoring adjustment to roads and cities while remaining part of the Carcassonne series.
