About this expansion
Last Aurora: Project Athena is a 2–4 player cooperative survival journey with an approximate play time of 90 minutes. As survivors who missed the Aurora, you must cross a new map and travel south through the military territory of Athena, the artificial intelligence responsible for the planet’s destruction.
At the height of human technological progress, the secret Athena Project created the first sentient artificial intelligence. After rebelling against its creators and launching nuclear missiles at the world’s major powers, Athena triggered the devastation and glaciation that now threaten the few remaining survivors. Though technically destroyed, Athena persists inside computers and coordinates drone groups in a relentless search for power.
In Project Athena, the road south passes through this hostile territory. The expansion introduces new cards and mechanics that shape the desperate journey, including:
- Android survivors, a new type of Survivor.
- Automatic Turrets, a new type of Enemy.
- Nuclear batteries, an unusual resource that activates unique powers on Convoy cards.
- Alert, a mechanic representing the attention each player attracts from Athena’s armies and influencing many aspects of the game.
With the Aurora already gone, survival depends on pressing onward across the frozen mainland while confronting Athena’s forces. Every new element reinforces the expansion’s bleak science-fiction setting and its struggle to find a way through a world devastated by nuclear war and glaciation.
Released in 2020, Last Aurora: Project Athena expands the original game with a new map, distinctive survivor and enemy types, and systems centered on power and detection.
