About this expansion

Paperback Adventures: Ex Machina is a 1–2-player Paperback Adventures experience with an approximately 150-minute play time. Play alone or with a friend as Ex Machina, a character built around defense, healing, laser charging, and risky ability use.

The ending will come, but not how you expect. Ex Machina offers a more defensive playstyle, giving you tools to withstand danger while preparing for a powerful counterattack. If you have enough boon counters, you can heal damage and remain in the fight.

  • Adopt a more defensive playstyle.
  • Heal damage when you have enough boon counters.
  • Charge your laser over time for a big blast.
  • Damage yourself to activate stronger card abilities.

Ex Machina’s laser rewards patience: charge it over time, then unleash its stored power in a big blast. At the same time, some card abilities invite a calculated risk, allowing you to damage yourself in exchange for greater strength.

As long as you have at least one character box, the core box contains everything else needed to play. The core box also provides space for bonus content from each character box, although it cannot store all of that content.

That storage feature helps you set up a new game more quickly. Whether you take on Paperback Adventures: Ex Machina alone or bring a friend, its mix of defensive play, healing, charging, and self-inflicted risk creates a distinctive path through the adventure.
