Fire in the Lake: Sovereign of Discord

About this expansion

Fire in the Lake: Sovereign of Discord is a 2023 expansion for 1–4 players, with games lasting about 180 minutes. It takes the conflict back to 1961–1963, providing a prequel to the events of Fire in the Lake and showing how an insurgency escalated toward conventional intervention by North Vietnam and the United States.

New scenarios let players begin just after the formation of the Viet Cong in 1961 or during the tumultuous final year of the Diem regime in 1963. These scenarios can continue into the base game’s 1964–1972 campaign, or through to 1975 with the Fall of Saigon expansion. A copy of Fire in the Lake is required to play.

The expansion adds systems designed around the unique pressures of the early 1960s. Strategic Hamlet pieces and rules represent the Diem regime’s population-relocation strategy, while the Hanoi and Washington Tracks influence faction resources and abilities. US and NVA Advisors replace Troops, enhancing and controlling the units of their South Vietnamese allies, and the Regime Stability Track models rising urban instability and coup plotting.

• A new ARVN leader card for Ngo Dinh Diem and Coup! Events threatening his rule
• A two-player Viet Cong versus ARVN scenario using the Initiative system from Colonial Twilight
• A card-based solitaire system similar to those in the Tr’ung Bot Update Pack and Fall of Saigon

Fire in the Lake: Sovereign of Discord also includes 40 bonus Events for the base game and two short scenarios: Turning Point, covering 1967–1969, and Long 1964, covering mid-1963 to early 1965.
