About this expansion

Castles of Mad King Ludwig: Colossal Moats & Barbicans is a 2022 expansion for 1–5 players that brings enlarged components and new setup options to the game.

The expansion includes room tiles, Moat tiles, and Barbican tiles that are twice the size of the standard pieces—four times larger in area. It also provides tile trays with lids that double as in-game tile holders, plus an adjusted score track designed for the larger components.

The larger format is especially convenient for solo play and conventions. The expansion requires the base game’s cards, card trays, and game pieces, including player markers, coins, towers, and tokens.

It also introduces two gameplay differences. The new Foyer tiles have three entrances on one side and four on the other, unlike the base game’s three entrances on both sides. This allows more variation when choosing each player’s starting position.

For the optional Moats & Barbicans module, the Barbican tiles no longer overlap the Foyer tiles. Depending on the orientation of the adjacent Foyer, a Barbican may therefore have no external entrance. Castles of Mad King Ludwig: Colossal Moats & Barbicans was available as a bundle with the Royal Collector’s Edition during its Kickstarter campaign.
