About this expansion
The Great Battles of Julius Caesar: The Civil Wars 48-45 B.C. – Dictator is a two-player game with an approximately 360-minute playing time, released in 1995. It introduces two key battles from the fading years of the Roman Republic.
This is a period defined by pressure from beyond Rome’s borders and by a deepening struggle for power within the Republic. Three major outside threats loom over the era: the Numidians under King Jugurtha, the Germanic invasion of the Cimbri, Teutons, and Ambrones, and the eastern threat posed by King Mithridates of Pontus.
At the same time, Rome is wracked by civil wars and a fierce contest between its two leading men at the turn of the century: Gaius Marius and L. Cornelius Sulla. Their conflict forms part of the wider crisis that would lead to the brutal dictatorship of Sulla.
The game presents a Republic in its death throes, as external dangers help transform the Roman army into a political power base. The old order is under increasing strain, and the prospect of military dictatorship is drawing closer.
