About this expansion

Chieftain: The British Army of the Rhine is a 1988 tactical combat game for 2 players, with games lasting about 240 minutes. It is the third module in the Assault Series and requires Assault or Boots & Saddles to play.

The game provides a broad selection of British equipment and maneuver units, including Chieftain and Challenger tanks, MCV-80 vehicles, and Saxon APCs. Alongside these well-equipped forward elements, the module includes the light security units that form part of the British Army of the Rhine’s reinforcements.

Chieftain also presents the Netherlands Army, with its distinct organization and equipment. Aviation and engineering assets connect the module directly with Bundeswehr and Boots & Saddles, expanding the forces and support available across the Assault Series.

The Assault system uses 250-meter hexes, five-minute turns, and platoon- or section-sized counters. These rules provide the framework for tactical engagements involving the game’s British, Dutch, and supporting units.

  • Three countersheets containing 480 5/8-inch counters
  • Two 17 x 22-inch maps: Assault Series Maps G and H
  • A 16-page additional rules booklet
  • Two player-aid charts

The wider series includes Assault: Tactical Combat in Europe – 1985, Boots & Saddles: Air Cavalry in the 80’s, Bundeswehr: NATO’s Front Line, and Reinforcements: New U.S. and Soviet Units for Assault. A further module, Close Air Support, was announced but apparently never released.
